Last day to swim at Chicago beaches, outdoor pools for season
CHICAGO (CBS)-- Monday is your last chance to visit any of the 22 Chicago beaches and neighborhood pools before they close for the season.
After Labor Day, lifeguards will post a red flag that will stay up through next May, signaling that swimming is not allowed.
Swimmers who do go in the water will be doing so at their own risk.
CBS 2's Shardaa Gray was out at North Avenue Beach where the heat wave got crowds of people to come out to relax in the sand or take a dip in the lake.
The visitors spent the unofficial end of summer soaking up the sun before the beaches closed for the season.
"It's awesome, you know," said Henry Lassa. "Everyone needs a day off every once in a while. This is a gorgeous day. You can't ask for anything better."
Swimming won't be permitted after 7 p.m. with no lifeguards on duty, which was why so many flocked to the beach on Monday.
Many reflected on what seemed like a short summer, including two friends who took advantage of the day's weather to test out their frisbee skills.
"It's a prime opportunity to hang out with your family," said Matt Brodsky. "I mean, I do miss my family back home in Jersey, but I've been able to make a new one here. So it's pretty nice."
Starting Tuesday, all indoor pools will reopen for open swim. Fall aquatics programs begin next week.
Beaches are expected to reopen on May 24.
