Laquan McDonald Protesters Gather At Mayor's Home, City Hall
(CBS) – For the third day in a row, protesters who claim there was a cover-up in the police-involved shooting death of Laquan McDonald took their message to Mayor Emanuel's North Side home.
The protesters gathered along the alley behind the house. They want the mayor to step down and vowed to gather outside Emanuel's home for 16 straight days. Sixteen is the number of times McDonald, a 17-year-old African American, was shot by a white police officer in October 2014.
About 50 demonstrators angry about the death also marched on Chicago City Hall Thursday, chanting, "How many shots? Sixteen shots!" At one point, they staged a "die in."
Protester Denise Berry says she was once the victim of police brutality.
"It is amazing to me that Rahm can walk the streets and we have to fear if we call the police to protect us," Berry tells CBS 2's Suzanne Le Mignot.
After leaving City Hall, they made their way to Michigan Avenue, trying to get to the site of the Chi-Town Rising New Year's Eve festivities.
With bike officers lining the entrance, protestors continued south down Michigan Avenue, blocking traffic, by lying on the street for a few minutes, then dispersing.
