Lane Tech College Prep Local School Council Votes To Do Away With Indians Logo, Mascot
CHICAGO (CBS)-- The Local School Council at Lane Tech College Prep voted Tuesday night to do away with the school's controversial "Indian" symbol and nickname.
During a special forum, the LSC voted to remove the name and symbol from the school. It had been part of the history of the school, at 2501 W. Addison St., for more than 100 years.
LSC parent rep Benjamin Wong told CBS 2 the council voted 12-0 to change the Indian symbol, with one of the teacher reps out on maternity leave.
Wong noted that the vote is a recommendation to the Chicago Public Schools, which will review the results of the vote and provide guidance once the next steps are determined.
A survey launched last month asked Lane Tech students, parents, teachers and alumni for feedback on the symbol, which features a Native American man wearing a feathered headdress.
Lane Tech's sports teams have been referred to as the Indians.
There have been pushes in the past to remove the Indian name and a renewed effort, due to protests against systemic racism.
Several older alumni were opposed to the idea, while many current students and recent graduates wanted the image gone. Both sides had petitions.
