Carjacker Crashes Stolen Honda In Lakeview
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A man was carjacked Monday night in Lakeview, and the thief crashed the stolen car while trying to get away from police.
Police said a 56-year-old man was double-parked in a silver 2014 Honda Accord near Halsted Street and Newport Avenue around 10 p.m., when another car pulled up in front of him.
Two teens got out of the other car, one of them holding a gun, and they forced him out of his Honda, and rifled through his pockets. One teen drove away in the stolen Honda, while the other fled the scene in the other car.
Police officers spotted the Honda a short time later, and tried to pull it over, but the driver sped off, and crashed into a Jeep parked on Briar Place near Cambridge Avenue. The crash pushed the Jeep into another parked car.
The 16-year-old boy behind the wheel of the stolen Honda tried to run away, but police arrested him after a short foot chase.
Three vehicles were damaged in the crash.
Lauren Ash's sister had taken advantage of free street parking on the block while she was out of town, but the strategy came at a cost this time. Her white Volkswagen was dented, but driveable.
"This was an attempt for her to save money," Ash said.
Although no one was injured, the Ash family was angry
"It's not my car, first of all, and I thought it was going to be less of a problem for her to park here, and now this is way worse. So that's mostly it. I mean, I'm pretty shocked right now," Ash said.
The owner of the Jeep also was pretty upset. He said he was at work when at the time of the crash, and his vehicle sustained far more damage.
Charges were pending against the 16-year-old who stole the Honda. Police were looking for two other suspects.
The carjacking capped off a weekend filled with auto thefts. Chicago police were investigating seven other stolen vehicle incidents on the North Side alone.
Earlier Monday, another motorist was the victim of a carjacking in northwest suburban Park Ridge. Around 9 p.m., the victim was at the Mariano's grocery at Cumberland and Higgins, when two suspects in ski masks approached and stole his jeep Cherokee.
