Lake County Deputies Use Naloxone To Revive Man Who Overdosed On Heroin
(CBS) -- Two Lake County Sheriff's Office deputies were able to revive a man who'd overdosed on heroin in Ingleside Saturday night.
The sheriff's office got a call about a man who was unconscious. They found him under a table in his living room. He wasn't breathing so they injected a shot of Naloxone into his thigh. Once he was revived he was taken to hospital.
Lake County Sheriff's detective Chris Covelli calls it a wonder drug and says all officers have been trained to use it.
"All of our highway patrol deputies are equipped with Naloxone along with all sworn members of the agencies," Covelli said. "Even our non-first responders like our warrants division, detectives, court division. Very often, we beat paramedics there to a scene."
There have been 30 saves overall in Lake County by emergency responders giving overdose patients a shot of the drug. The story is the same all around Chicago and the suburbs. Police say it's quick to use and it means overdose victims go home from the hospital instead of going to the morgue.
