Kirk, Ministers Launch Faith-Based Program For Immigrant Children

(CBS) -- Senator Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) has developed a faith-based program with ministers to help care for migrant children being detained in Illinois, reports WBBM's Kimberly Easton.

Niños De Compasion is a faith-based partnership designed to take care of migrant children. Kirk says Heartland Alliance and a group of ministers will work together to support children fleeing from Central America.

"I want to make sure that these kids have the widest possible faith-based network to fall back on while they are in detention," Kirk said. "We have asked Heartland Alliance, that is now taking care of these kids nearby here, to let these pastors minister them on a volunteer basis to make sure they have greater spiritual guidance and know that there is a network behind them."

The program protects vulnerable children by connecting pastors and community groups with the children and their families.
