Apparent kidnapping prompts police pursuit, ending with crash on Chicago's Northwest Side
CHICAGO (CBS) — A possible armed kidnapping that originated in the north suburbs ended in a crash overnight on the Northwest Side of Chicago.
North Chicago police said, around 10:30 p.m. Monday, officers responded to a call from woman who said she was being chased by her boyfriend in a gray Mazda sedan, and he might be armed with a gun.
Officers could not find the woman, but when police spotted the gray Mazda, it fled the scene, and officers discovered the woman's cell phone appeared to be pinging from inside the car.
North Chicago police followed the car onto the Edens Expressway, where Illinois State Police joined the pursuit.
Police chased the car onto the Kennedy Expressway, before it exited the expressway in Logan Square.
The chase continued on city streets, with the Mazda going as fast as 70 mph on side streets, before it crashed into another car at the intersection of Diversey and Milwaukee avenues around 11:15 p.m. After the crash, the suspects then jumped out of the vehicle and ran off.
Witnesses said state police arrested them all in a matter of minutes.
North Chicago police said two people who fled from the car were arrested, and one of them was found to have an active arrest warrant.
No major injuries were reported during the chase and crash.
The woman who called police was found inside the Mazda, but North Chicago police said she was not cooperating with the investigation.
