It's The 10-Year Anniversary Of Michael Barrett Punching A.J. Pierzynski
(CBS) As the Cubs and White Sox continue to lead their respective divisions in the present, today marks one of the legendary moments in their rivalry.
It was 10 years ago today that Cubs catcher Michael Barrett punched White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski, who had trucked him over in a home-plate collision while scoring a run in the second inning at U.S. Cellular Field. It led to a brawl between the two teams in and remains arguably the most well-known moment in the history of the rivalry.
Barrett would receive a 10-game suspension and fine, while Pierzynski was only fined. Before a series at Wrigley Field later in the season, Barrett apologized to Pierzynski and the two shook hands.
2006 was a rough season for the Cubs, who went 66-96. The White Sox were much better at 90-72 but finished six games back in the division race and five games out of a wild-card spot.
