Is Chicago Area Getting A White Christmas?

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A white Christmas is possible for parts of the Chicago area, but forecasters aren't yet certain where heavy snowfall will be on Christmas Eve.

A storm moving through the Gulf Coast on Tuesday should make its way to the Midwest on Wednesday, and bring a very thin band of heavy snow with it as temperatures drop below freezing.

Most of northern and central Illinois and northwest Indiana will likely get light accumulations on Wednesday, if any. However, a thin band of heavy snowfall could bring 3 to 6 inches of heavy, wet snow to a small swath of the Chicago area.

However, the National Weather Service has not yet issued any winter storm warnings or watches, as the exact path of the storm was unclear Tuesday morning.

That thin band of heavy snow could bring snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour, with near whiteout conditions possible. That thin band could track as far west as Rockford, or as far east as northwest Indiana.

Forecasters should have a better idea of the storm's path by Tuesday afternoon.
