IPRA Critics Insist On Elected Watchdogs For Police Misconduct
(CBS) -- Advocates for civilian oversight of police misconduct cases went to Chicago City Hall Wednesday as aldermen were focused on other issues.
Mayor Emanuel has proposed abolishing the Independent Police Review Authority, in favor of a civilian agency. But that's still not enough for the protesters who gathered downtown.
They're calling for a Civilian Police Accountability Council of elected members. That is different from Emanuel's idea of appointing members to a new panel.
All of this has surfaced after IPRA the Laquan McDonald shooting in which a white officer fatally shot a black teen suspect.
Critics have said IPRA has turned a blind eye to police misconduct and brutality.
The U.S. Department of Justice has opened an investigation into the Chicago Police Department.
