11 children injured after 3 school buses crash on I-55 near Channahon

CHANNAHON, Ill. (CBS) -- Twelve children suffered minor injuries after three school buses were involved in a crash Tuesday morning on Interstate 55 near southwest suburban Channahon.

Illinois State Police said the crash happened around 8:30 a.m. in the northbound lanes of I-55 in Grundy County.

The Channahon Fire Protection District said the school buses rear-ended each other. A small fire was found in the battery component of one school bus, but firefighters quickly put it out.

Each bus was transporting a between 20 and 30 children, along with school district staff and drivers. A total of 12 kids were taken to area hospitals for evaluation.

Additional school buses were brought in to relocate the remaining passengers on the buses to the Loves Truck Stop in Channahon after the crash.

Reed Custer Middle School District Administration and Braidwood police worked with fire command authorities to get kids back to their school to be reunited with their parents.

The right northbound lane of I-55 was temporarily closed after the crash.
