Interstate 55 Reopens After Crash Shuts Down All Lanes Near Plainfield

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A driver suffered severe head injuries Monday morning in a rollover crash on Interstate 55, which caused authorities to block traffic for about 10 minutes so a helicopter could take the man to the hospital.

Illinois State Police said a car was heading north on I-55 near Route 126 around 8:15 a.m., when the driver lost control of the vehicle. The car drove into a ditch on the right side of the expressway and rolled over several times.

The driver suffered severe head injuries, police said.

All northbound and southbound lanes of the interstate were closed after the crash as a Lifestar medical helicopter airlifted the driver to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove.

Police said northbound and southbound lanes were closed for about 10 minutes while the helicopter was at the scene.
