Infant Returned Unharmed After Hobart Kidnapping
CHICAGO (STMW) -- An infant who had been reported kidnapped Sunday night in northwest Indiana was returned unharmed about four hours later, with the aid of a regional SWAT team, police said.
The alleged kidnapper, who police say is the noncustodial father, is in custody and the case will be presented to the Lake County prosecutor's office on Tuesday.
Hobart police responded to a call of a reported kidnapping at about 7 p.m. Sunday at the 2000 block of Dogwood Trail, at the Huntington Cove apartment complex.
A woman at the site told police the noncustodial father had taken the newborn from her at a location in Gary and refused to return the child back to her. She pointed out the apartment where he lives.
Police heard movement within the apartment and attempted to make contact with the suspect. They also learned the suspect had a court order restraining him from contacting the victim, and called the North West Regional SWAT team for assistance.
SWAT was able to make contact with the suspect about 11 p.m. Hobart police say the suspect surrendered to police without incident and the child was returned to the woman.
