Immigration Rights Activists Hope For Action From Obama
CHICAGO (CBS) -- President Barack Obama delivered his State of the Union address -- his sixth in office -- and second since his re-election. The President says he's not going to wait anymore for Congress to move forward.
An immigration rights group watched the speech at a church in the Heart of Chicago neighborhood. They gathered at this heart of Chicago church to watch President Obama's speech with a sharp focus.
"I hope he brings up the subject about immigration," said Yesenia Guerrero.
That's because both of Yesenia Guerrero's parents are undocumented. She hopes the President will move the issue forward before leaving office.
"He has shown that he has the legislative power to give us something," said Guerrero.
But much of Obama's focus was on improving the wages of those struggling to live now by whatever means possible.
"Let's make this a year of action. That's what most Americans want," said Obama.
"It really is at the point that now it is now or never because the last two years you are a lame duck and I don't care who you are as President so he has got to get it done this time," said Democratic political analyst Delmarie Cobb.
Cobb believes, in retrospect, Obama should have accomplished more early on, when he had control of Congress. GOP pundit Dan Proft goes one step further.
"I am tired of politicians whether they be President Obama or Republicans who think that their good intentions are enough. We need to start measuring our elected leaders on the outputs," said Proft.
