Illinois Sees Nearly 50% Drop In Weekly Unemployment Claims; More Than 8,000 Filed Last Week
CHICAGO (CBS) -- More than 8,000 new unemployment claims were filed in Illinois last week, about half the total filed one week earlier.
A total of 8.089 new claims were filed statewide the week of Sept. 6, according to the Illinois Department of Employment Security, a 48% decrease from the previous week, when 15,570 new unemployment claims were filed in Illinois the week of August 30.
Last week's claims were the fewest since the start of the pandemic. Illinois hasn't seen so few unemployment claims in one week since February 2020.
For comparison, Illinois had 27,384 filed during the week of September 7 last year. However, Illinois saw only 6,614 claims during the same week in 2019.
Illinois' drop in unemployment came as claims rose nationwide, with an estimated 332,000 total claims filed across the country last week, up from 312,000 the week before.
There were 15,546 new unemployment claims were filed in Illinois during the week of August 23.
