Illinois Politicians Rally To Get Voters To Cast Ballots
CHICAGO (CBS) -- With so many people turned off by their choices for president, Illinois politicians and their parties are working extra hard to get voters to cast ballots, WBBM's Nancy Harty reports.
Emma Mitts, 37th Ward Alderman, says a constituent recently asked her why she should vote for Hillary Clinton, since the woman said Clinton hasn't done anything while she's been in public office.
The democrat's response was electing Donald Trump will set African-Americans back from any progress they've made.
Mitts and other democrats voiced their support for the entire ticket at a west side restaurant this morning.
Comptroller candidate Susana Mendoza encourages democrats to "vote blue no matter who."
She says eager voters should share their enthusiasm with others and those who aren't excited about Clinton should "get them to understand what's at stake" by electing Trump.
Republican Senator Mark Kirk is not supporting Trump and has asked him to drop out of the race.
Kirk Campaign Manager Kevin Artl says the two unfavorable candidates make the senate race even more important.
Artl says volunteers in their 8 campaign offices across the state have made more than 2 million phone calls and knocked on about 250 thousand voters' doors.
Mitts says West Side elected officials are robocalling voters and holding a get out the vote rally on October 23rd, the day before early voting begins in the wards.
