Illinois firefighters receive Medal of Honor award

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Six firefighters across the state of Illinois received the Medal of Honor award.

It's the highest honor given out by the state to a firefighter for an act of outstanding bravery or heroism. Two of those firefighters are from the Chicago area.

Governor JB Pritzker talked about the awards during a ceremony at the fallen firefighters memorial in Springfield.

"I know awards recognition does not make up for the sleepless nights and the hours away from your loved ones," said Pritzker. "But I hope these awards bring you pride and comfort in knowing that the state of Illinois sees you and your sacrifice and your service."    

The six medal of honor recipients include firefighter-EMT Juan Gonzalez from the Chicago Fire Department and firefighter-paramedic Matt Mullins from the Plainfield Fire Protection District.

Several other awards for bravery and honor will be handed out on Tuesday.
