Homewood Wonders: Will Road Salt Make It In Time?

(CBS) – One south suburb worries about road salt. Last year, Homewood ran out because there was so much snow.

This year, city officials have a different problem: Will the salt arrive in time?

CBS 2's Roseanne Tellez reports.

The salt on hand at the Homewood Public Works Department is ready to go. But after last year's brutal weather depleted supplies there's a new concern.

The salt comes by barge down the Calumet River. This year, the O'Brien Locks that open to Lake Calumet are closed for repairs from now until mid-December and then again from mid-January until March.

"Once again, it's Mother Nature. You never know. We're prepared for it and we'll make the best of it," Public Works Director John Schaefer says.
