Englewood home invasion suspect arrested in Berkeley after pursuit

BERKELEY, Ill. (CBS) -- A driver was arrested after a high-speed chase into the western suburbs early Friday, and he has been connected to a home invasion a day earlier in the Englewood neighborhood in which two men were pistol-whipped.

As CBS 2's Sabrina Franza reported Friday, there were multiple scenes to the crime. We have been trying to get in touch with neighbors all day – but everyone with whom we spoke said the crime was so quiet, they had no idea it was even happening.

As for the arrest, it happened miles away. A police pursuit down the expressway ended in popped tires – and one person being pulled over and arrested all the way in west suburban Berkeley.

The original crime scene was on South Union Avenue n Englewood. Neighbors we spoke with on camera said it happened so silently that they had no idea that around 6 p.m. Thursday, at least four men went up to a 23-year-old man in his white Volkswagen Passat, took out a handgun, and demanded that man's belongings.

The attackers struck both the 23-year-old man and a 74-year-old man who was inside the home with the back end of the handgun, police said.

The men took money – and whatever else they could – before also taking the car that was later seen speeding down the Kennedy Expressway.

Sources told us license plate readers caught the car in motion less than a day later on Friday morning – under the cover of darkness, heading toward Berkeley.

Illinois State Police followed. Officers were eventually able to lay down stop sticks. The spikes stopped the car from going any farther.

Only one person was in the car, and that person was arrested.

As of Friday evening, charges were still pending on that driver. He was the only person taken into custody Friday morning.
