After Monday storms, another severe weather threat Tuesday for Chicago area

Stormy Tuesday clears out for sunny Wednesday

CHICAGO (CBS) — Scattered strong to severe thunderstorms swept through the area Monday, bringing reports of wind damage, hail and flash flooding.

The storms Monday caused a microburst with 60 to 70 mph winds – which took down trees around the area. Hail also fell with the rain – with hail the size of quarters reported on Chicago's Southwest Side.

There is a more widespread threat of severe weather for the Chicago area on Tuesday.

Most of the day Tuesday will be hot, windy and humid as south winds gust 30-40 miles per hour. A complex of damaging thunderstorms is expected to develop in Iowa during the afternoon, then race the Chicago area's way by sunset.

Storms may arrive in counties in the western part of the CBS 2 viewing area as early as 7 p.m. packing damaging winds, large hail and an isolated tornado. Storms are expected to race into Chicago late Tuesday night, and weaken as they move eastward.

Some areas may see wind gusts over 60 miles per hour, potentially downing tree limbs and causing localized power outages.

Cooler, pleasant weather returns Wednesday and Thursday, and then periods of rain are in the forecast Memorial Day weekend.
