Highland Park City Council meets for first time since parade shooting

Highland Park City Council holds first meeting since parade massacre

HIGHLAND PARK, Ill. (CBS) -- It was an emotional evening in Highland Park Monday night as the City County held its first in-person meeting since the July 4th parade mass shooting.

Members started off with a moment of silence to honor the seven victims who were killed.

There were also several thank-yous for the first responders who rushed to the scene.

Mayor Nancy Rotering also urged residents to be patient and be there for each other through all the trauma.

"Collectively, we experienced violent events that will impact each of us in different ways and at different times," Rotering said. "Understandably, many of us are feeling a range of emotions, and none of us are alone in this process."

Among the speakers at the City Council meeting was an artist who created portraits of the victims for the city's memorial vigil. Herbert Cruz donated them to the city for safe keeping.

Cruz lived next door to the building where the gunfire started, but is moving this week because he says it's just too hard.

Killed in the massacre were Katherine Goldstein, 64 of Highland Park; Irina McCarthy, 35, of Highland Park; Kevin McCarthy, 37, of Highland Park; Jacki Sundheim, 63, of Highland Park; Stephen Straus, 88, of Highland Park; Nicolas Toledo-Zaragoza, 78, of Morelos, Mexico; and Eduardo Uvaldo, 69 of Waukegan. Dozens of others were injured.
