Heavy rain, flash flood warning in effect Tuesday in Chicago

Flash flood warnings issued in parts of Illinois Tuesday afternoon

CHICAGO (CBS)  The National Weather Service has issued flash flood warnings as Chicago and surrounding areas saw heavy storms through Tuesday afternoon.

The NWS earlier Tuesday afternoon issued a tornado warning for a southernmost section of Cook County, which was allowed to expire.

Following widespread, heavy rain midday into the afternoon Tuesday, rain showers taper off overnight.

A few lake-effect showers, some of which may be briefly heavy, are still expected in Chicago and northwest Indiana overnight into Wednesday.

More pleasant weather returns Wednesday and Thursday, but additional rain may return this weekend. We are tracking Tropical Storm Helene, which is expected to make landfall in Florida as a major category 3 hurricane late Thursday.

Following landfall, the remnants of the storm may trek as far northward as Illinois and Indiana this weekend. While the forecast is still uncertain, scattered showers are currently expected Saturday into early next week.
