Beryl remnants bring heavy rain to Chicago area

More rain coming later on Thursday

CHICAGO (CBS) — A Flood Watch is in effect from I-55 southeastward, including the Chicago area and northwest Indiana, with remnants from Hurricane Beryl bringing heavy rain to the area.

A Flash Flood Warning has also been issued for southeastern Cook County, and northwestern Lake County in Indiana, until 6:45 p.m.

Street flooding and sewer backups were reported in some south suburbs Tuesday afternoon. Periods of heavy, tropical rain may flood roadways, fields, and basements through midday Wednesday.

The Ford Chicago Assembly Plant at 12600 S. Torrence Ave. was affected by flooding Tuesday afternoon. Ford said the plant went on a brief work pause due to a small amount of standing water, but was never evacuated—and was back to full operation by the evening.

The remnants of once-major Hurricane Beryl have sent copious moisture our way, colliding with a stalled front overhead. This combination has led to rain overspreading the area from south to north late Tuesday.

Widespread rain followed Tuesday night, and a wet Wednesday morning commute is expected.

While DeKalb and McHenry counties may see less than an inch of rain, Chicago is likely to see 1-2 inches, and parts of northwest Indiana may total 4-5 inches.

As the tropical system exits midday Wednesday, a separate disturbance arrives. This will lead to additional late-day showers and thunderstorms on Wednesday and Thursday.
