Person hospitalized after hazmat situation at Gage Park apartment

CHICAGO (CBS) – One person is in the hospital following a hazmat situation inside a two-story apartment in Gage Park Thursday morning.

Fire crews arrived at the scene around 8 a.m. They said there was a high carbon monoxide reading coming from a faulty furnace inside the apartment, located in the 3000 block of West 54th Place. 

The levels reached over 400 ppm which can be fatal. 

All of the occupants inside at the time were removed and the gas in the building was shut off. 

One person was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital in an unknown condition.

Fire officials are reminding people to have their furnaces checked as well as CO detectors and fire alarms.
