Guardian Angels Assist In Search For West Pullman Rapist
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Members of the Guardian Angels were out Wednesday morning to help search for a serial rapist who has attacked at least three women in West Pullman neighborhood.
WBBM Newsradio's Nancy Harty reports the suspect attacked each woman from behind, and showed or implied he had a handgun. He covered each victim's head with a piece of clothing, and forced them into a vehicle, where he raped them.
Chicago police said three women were attacked this month, the most recent being last week in the 12900 block of South Parnell Avenue.
Another woman was raped at gunpoint in an alley in the 12700 block of South Emerald Avenue on May 12. The first attack was on May 4 in the 500 block of West 124th Street.
Members of the Guardian Angels joined the hunt for the rapist on Wednesday, handing out flyers at the corner of 127th and Halsted.
National director Miguel Fuentes said many of the people they spoke to weren't aware of the attacks.
"They're in shock. They can't believe it," he said. "One rape is bad enough, now you've got three rapes within 10 days."
Fuentes said the Guardian Angels are looking for tips to catch the man before he attacks again, and will pass them on to police.
He said sometimes members of the public might be reluctant to talk to police.
"We're not interested in getting people's information. All we need to know is if there's a name, maybe a street name or something; something that we can give to the police, who maybe can follow up and that can lead to this individual getting behind bars, where he belongs," Fuentes said.
A detailed description of the suspect was not available.
