Girl, 11, Killed By Stray Bullet In West Side Shooting

(CBS) – An 11-year-old girl was killed by a stray bullet as she played with friends Friday night in the Garfield Park neighborhood.

According to family, Shamiya Adams was at a sleepover at a friend's house in the 3900 block of West Gladys when gunshots were fired on the streets at about 9:30 p.m. A bullet came through a window or wall and struck the girl in the head, apparently as she played with friends in a bedroom.

She was taken in critical condition to Mt. Sinai. Family arrived throughout the night, praying as she was inside the hospital. At around 7:30 a.m. Saturday, a relative announced Shamiya had died.

Police do not have any suspects and activist Andrew Holmes is urging anyone with information to share it with the police.

Neighbor Tywon Mitchell described Shamiya as a "playful little girl."

"She's always playing around -- always smiling and happy. When I walked past, all I heard was shots," said Mitchell. "It's crazy this is happening in out black community and our little girls…they don't deserve that."

The family hopes an $8,000 reward will lead to the killer. They gathered at a vigil Saturday evening to denounce her killing.

"A great grandmother should not have to bury their great grandchild...this is some pain I can't even explain, it hurts so bad," Lureen Miller, the victim's great-grandmother.

Police are reviewing footage from a blue light camera right across from that home.
