Girl, 14, Killed In Crash On Tri-State Tollway
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A teenager was killed and seven other people were injured in a crash that shut down the eastbound Tri-State Tollway for more than three hours overnight.
Three people were ejected from a 2002 Ford Explorer on the Tri-State near Half Day Road around 10:30 p.m., when the SUV blew a tire, went out of control, and struck a guardrail, according to Illinois State Police.
Destiny Horton, 14, was pronounced dead at the scene after she was thrown from the SUV and hit by a semi-trailer truck.
Horton's mother says the family was returning from Great America when the accident happened.
Seven other people – including the two others ejected from the Explorer – were taken to Lake Forest Hospital or Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. Police said their injuries were not life-threatening.
Police shut down all eastbound lanes of Interstate 94 near Half Day road for about 3 ½ hours after the crash. All lanes have since reopened.
