Germany-Brazil Match Was Most Tweeted Sporting Event Ever

(CBS) Germany's 7-1 rout of host Brazil in Tuesday afternoon's World Cup semifinal was astonishing on many levels.

Germany became the first team to score six goals on Brazil since 1940.

It was Brazil's first home loss in a competitive match since 1975.

The six-goal loss was the worst a host nation had ever suffered in the World Cup.

And now you can add this feat to the list: This match was the most tweeted sporting event of all time, according to Twitter's metrics.

The game drew about 35.6 million tweets, shattering the record of 24.9 million tweets sent during February's Super Bowl XLVIII between the Seahawks and Broncos.

Tweets also hit a peak of more than 580,000 tweets per minute when Germany's Sami Khedira scored his team's fifth goal in the first half, which was the fourth in six minutes.

Simply put, it was hard to believe what was unfolding, and that was the sentiment expressed on Twitter.
