Gas Station Canopy Collapses In Little Village
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A gas station canopy collapsed overnight in the Little Village neighborhood.
The massive canopy came crashing down around 2 a.m. at the Shell station at the intersection of 26th Street and Kedzie Avenue.
Rain had been falling steadily for some time before the canopy collapsed, but it will be up to investigators to determine if a buildup of water on top of the canopy might have contributed to the collapse.
No one was using the pumps at the time, and the attendant was inside, so no one was injured.
A payphone at the station was taken out, and several electric lines and cables were ripped out.
Jose Escudia, who has been selling flowers, stuffed animals, and more at that corner for 30 years, said he's thankful the freak accident happened while he was still at home in bed and the corner was desolate.
"I was sleeping, but when I came later, I was glad," he said.
The gas station has been closed, and police have blocked off the area to keep people away from the hazardous conditions.
