Gary, Ind. Man Drowns In Pine Lake While Boating With Friends

(CBS) -- A 21-year-old Gary, Ind. man drowned Friday night seeking relief from the heat at Pine Lake in LaPorte.

WBBM's Mike Krauser reports.

Jeremy Dabney was with a group of friends on a pontoon boat. Around 6:30 p.m., a number of them jumped into the water, but Dabney started struggling, authorities say.

Two men tried to help him but police say he was panicking and pulled them under. They were struggling, too, and swam back to the boat.

Dabney went under and didn't come back up.

Divers from the LaPorte County Sheriff's Office and Michigan City Police Department were unable to locate him. Around midnight, state conservation officers located the drowned man using sonar.

Alcohol is not believed to have been a factor.
