Frigid Temperatures Follow On Heels Of Thursday's Heavy Snow
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A day after an unexpectedly heavy snowstorm, another round of frigid weather has moved into the Chicago area.
Thanks to an extended stretch of lake effect snow, some parts of the area got 6 to 8 inches of snow on Thursday. According to the National Weather Service, 8 inches fell in downtown Chicago from Wednesday night until Thursday afternoon. The city's official total was 5.7 inches at O'Hare International Airport, while at Midway International Airport, 6.4 inches were measured by the time the snow ended.
After the snowstorm ended, temperatures dropped nearly 20 degrees in 12 hours. As of shortly before 3 p.m. Thursday, it was 18 degrees at O'Hare. By 3 a.m. Friday, the temperature had edged to zero. As of 6 a.m., it was 1 below.
A wind chill advisory was in effect for Cook, De Kalb, DuPage, Grundy, Kane, Lake, McHenry, and Will counties until 9 a.m., due to wind chills that could reach 15 to 25 below zero in some areas.
Luckily, the cold spell won't stick around long. While temperatures will only be in the teens on Friday, and then drop below zero early Saturday, they will gradually climb into the 20s by Sunday morning, and into the low 30s by Sunday afternoon.
However, Saturday night and Sunday morning also will bring another round of snow, with 2 to 6 more inches possible.
Tuesday could bring temperatures near 40 degrees, which is close to the normal high for early March.
