Former Prep Basketball Standout Slain On West Side

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A former Chicago Public Schools basketball star was shot dead Monday on the West Side.

Jonathan Mills, who played for North Lawndale High School's 2A state championship team in 2008, was shot multiple times in the 4100 block of West Roosevelt at 1:27 p.m., according to police.

He was most recently playing for the Chicago Fury of the new Midwest Basketball League, which tweeted news of his death on Monday.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

His former college basketball coach at Southern Mississippi also tweeted about the shooting.

In 2008, Mills was part of the North Lawndale team that went 31-4, defeating Peoria Manual for the title.

He was a first team all-state selection.

He played college basketball at the University Of Southern Mississippi.

Mills had been playing ball in Canada but was banned from the league for the 2015-16 season.

The league said the suspension was for conduct detrimental to the best interests of the league.
