Staying cold in Chicago, with snow Friday

Morning snow Friday, much colder next week in Chicago

CHICAGO (CBS) — Clouds are set to clear out Wednesday night, which will allow temperatures to plummet in the single digits to lower teens.

Even though the wind won't be very strong, it will still feel like the single digits stepping outside for wind chills Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

By daybreak, expect a lot of sunshine with temperatures reaching the middle to upper 20s. Winds could gust near 20 mph, from the southwest and eventually the clouds will be thickening up across the area.

Thursday night into Friday morning, snow showers will arrive. The morning commute could become tricky to navigate with the blowing and drifting snow.

Accumulations look minor, around 1 to 2 inches near and east of I-55. Elsewhere, under an inch is expected.

However, the timing is not ideal, so Friday morning is a Weather Alert day. Conditions will improve by Friday afternoon with only a few leftover snow showers.

The area will get a break from the snow Saturday, but another chance of light accumulations will arrive Sunday.

Arctic air gets reinforced next week, with highs only in the teens on Tuesday and Wednesday.
