Five-Vehicle Crash Closes Westbound I-80/94 In Lake Station
LAKE STATION, Ind. (CBS) -- A semi driver was ejected in a crash that shut down all westbound lanes of I-80/94 Wednesday morning in northwest Indiana.
Traffic had slowed for another crash nearby and a semi tanker crested the hill at the 16 mile marker near Lake Station, Indiana, "at a high rate of speed." The truck rear-ended another semi-trailer, according to Indiana State Police.
The crash caused a chain-reaction, which included the semi-tanker striking two additional vehicles and the semi-trailer striking another car, police said. The tanker was filled with milk, and the trailer was filled with empty basket containers.
The driver of the tanker, a 58-year-old man from Kalamazoo, Michigan, was ejected from his truck and taken to Methodist Hospital Northlake Campus in Gary, police said. He was later airlifted to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.
No other injuries were reported.
All westbound lanes were shut down after the crash, but had reopened as of 1:40 p.m., police said.
