Firefighters Battle Flames, Frozen Hydrants In Chatham
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Firefighters battling an extra-alarm blaze in Chatham overnight were hampered by frozen hydrants, thanks to the frigid temperatures in Chicago.
The fire started around 1:40 a.m. Tuesday in a vacant three-flat in the 7900 block of South Drexel Avenue.
When crews arrived, nearby hydrants were frozen solid, so the Fire Department had to call in Water Management Department crews to heat the hydrants with steam, and get water flowing.
Once the hydrants were working, firefighters attacked the blaze from above, using tower ladder trucks, while crews on the ground worked to control the flames.
It took firefighters more than half an hour to extinguish the blaze.
No injuries were reported.
