Firefighter Hurt Battling Elgin Apartment Blaze
CHICAGO (STMW) -- A northwest suburban firefighter suffered minor injuries while helping to put out an apartment fire in Elgin Saturday morning.
Smoke was coming from the side of the building in the 100 block of South Gifford Street when crews responded at 10:08 a.m., according to a statement from the Elgin Fire Department.
Firefighters found a mattress on fire in a first-floor bedroom and removed it through a window, extinguishing the fire in the front yard, officials said. The rest of the fire in the bedroom was brought under control in less than 10 minutes.
Everyone in the building got out safely when smoke detectors went off, officials said. A firefighter suffered a leg injury and was taken to a hospital for evaluation.
Damage to the apartment was estimated at $2,000 but the building is still habitable, officials said. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
