Fire Damages Home In Elgin

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A house fire that caused $30,000 in damage to a northwest suburban Elgin home Monday afternoon apparently started when a candle fell onto a pile of clothes.

Authorities were called at 3:14 p.m. with reports of clothes on fire in a bedroom of a house in the 1000 block of Center Street, according to a statement from the Elgin Fire Department. Crews arrived within two minutes to see smoke coming from a second-floor window and occupants evacuating the building.

Crews were able to contain the fire to the bedroom and extinguish it quickly, fire officials said. The building was deemed uninhabitable because of the damage from the fire as well as smoke and water damage, with preliminary reports estimating the damage at about $30,000.

The Hoffman Estates and East Dundee fire departments assisted in battling the fire, according to the statement. No injuries were reported.

Investigators determined the fire was accidental and started when an unattended candle fell into clothing on the floor, according to the fire department.
