6 pets die in apartment house fire near Illinois-Wisconsin state line
ANTIOCH, Ill. (CBS) -- Six pets were killed Wednesday afternoon when a fire broke out in an apartment house in Antioch.
The Antioch Fire Department was called at 3:09 p.m. after the fire broke out in an American foursquare house at 24220 W. North Ave. in Antioch.
When they arrived, there were heavy smoke and flames coming from the east and south side of the house, and people were trapped on the second floor, the fire department said.
The house had multiple mailboxes and routes of entry and had been sectioned off into a multi-occupancy apartment building. The Antioch Fire Department said the house had four units.
The house is located just south of the Illinois-Wisconsin state line, and just north of Channel Lake. Firefighters from both Illinois and Wisconsin municipal departments responded to the scene, as a second alarm was called
A total of 15 people were displaced by the fire. Six pets were rescued, but six died in the fire, the fire department said.
On the ground, we saw the rescue of several animals from the fire – including a duck.
Fire crews worked for about three hours to put out the fire and put out hot spots.
Only one unit was on fire, but the other three were damaged by smoke. The whole house is now inhabitable, the fire department said. A monetary damage estimate was not available Wednesday night.
Residents were referred to the American Red Cross for assistance, the fire department said.
One occupant was treated on the scene, and no firefighters were injured the fire department said.
