Felon Charged After Girlfriend's Son Shot By Another Boy Playing With Gun
CHICAGO (STMW) -- Bail was set at $350,000 for a Chicago man who left a gun on top of a refrigerator at his girlfriend's Lawndale home, where an unsupervised boy found it and accidentally shot another boy.
Jeffery Williams, 34, was on parole for drug possession when he left the gun in his girlfriend's kitchen on Tuesday, Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Sarah Karr said during a court hearing Sunday.
The shooting happened about 10:45 a.m. Tuesday inside an apartment in the 3700 block of West 13th Street.
A 9-year-old boy who lives on the block and was visiting a friend at the home climbed onto a counter and retrieved the gun. He pulled the trigger once and nothing happened, Karr said. The second time he pulled the trigger, he fired a bullet that hit Williams' girlfriend's 8-year-old son in his lower back, she said.
Williams, of the 1100 block of South Harding, was charged with one felony count of unlawful use of a weapon by a felon and misdemeanor counts of endangering a child, possession of cannabis and violating parole, according to Chicago Police.
Williams' girlfriend, Micquelyn Biles, who is also a convicted felon, was charged with one felony count of unlawful use of a weapon by a felon and one misdemeanor count of endangering the welfare of a child. She was ordered held on $75,000 bail Thursday.
Karr said Biles and Williams instructed the wounded boy to lie to doctors at Mount Sinai Hospital and tell them he was shot by unknown males while playing basketball in the backyard.
The boy has been treated at the hospital and released, Karr said.
