Fatal Shooting In Roseland Possibly First Homicide Of Memorial Day Weekend
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Chicago police said a 29-year-old man fatally shot in Roseland Saturday evening was possibly the first homicide of Memorial Day weekend.
According to police, the man was standing on a porch in the 100 block of West 109th Place when an unknown offender opened fire, striking the victim.
The victim was transported to Christ Hospital in critical condition and later died.
Area South Detectives were investigating.
No one was in custody.
The killing happened about four hours after Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson and Mayor Lori Lightfoot talked about Chicago's public safety plans for the holiday. That includes about 1,200 additional police officers with an emphasis on enforcement between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m.
"My mother used to say not much good happens after 11 o'clock or midnight, and we know that from statistics," Lightfoot said.
Some CPD officers are part of a Mobile Task Force, including 44 who have been earmarked to work on mass transit to keep the CTA and bus lines safe. One hundred others are dedicated to high traffic areas like the Magnificent Mile.
