Grandmother found dead days after going missing in Chicago
CHICAGO (CBS) --A search came to a grim ending Tuesday for an octogenarian abuela who had not been seen since the weekend on the city's Southwest Side.
The family of Francisca Renteria said she was found deceased Wednesday. Chicago Police sources said Renteria's body was found by Cook County Sheriff's officers near an industrial building at 51st Street and Meade Avenue.
This sad ending comes after Renteria's granddaughters spent days stopping strangers on the street, knocking on doors, and ringing doorbells.
"She just came from Mexico two, three months ago, so we were all excited to have her here," granddaughter Karina Juarez said Tuesday, "and it's hard that now, she's missing somewhere."
Home surveillance showed Renteria, who suffered from dementia, leaving the house at 57th Street and Narragansett Avenue in the Garfield Ridge community Sunday—which was the last time she was seen before her body was found. A loved one was taking a nap at the time.
"She managed to open the door and walk out," said Juarez.
On Monday and Tuesday, the 4-foot 11-inch, 130-pound grandmother, who spoke only Spanish, was still missing. On Wednesday, the family's worst fears came true.
Late Wednesday, Renteria's family said she appreciated the help of so many people, and also said they were not answering any questions at this time.
