Family Of Man Fatally Shot By Markham Police Searching For Answers

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A nightclub brawl in South Suburban Markham turns deadly, when police are forced to shoot a man they say threatened them with a gun.

But the victim's family says they don't buy it, and this morning, they're asking for answers.

Markham police shot and killed 36-year-old Donte Jones early Sunday morning. His family spoke in West Suburban Maywood Monday morning, CBS 2's Chelsea Irving reports, where some 30 friends and family members gathered to speak out briefly through tears and ask police for answers.

"I just want to know what happened to my son," Barbara Jones, Donte Jones' mother said Monday morning. "The police haven't contacted me. I haven't heard anything. They wouldn't let me see his body. I just want to know what happened. I want to see the videos. I want justice. I just want to know what happened to my son and why."

Jones, a father of four, was outside the Stadium Bar on Dixie Highway, where a brawl had broken out around 2 a.m. Markham police said that Jones had a gun and moved toward police. That's when police said an officer, in fear of his life, shot and killed Jones.

Helena Jones, Donte's sister, fought through tears to say, "He was a father. He was a son. He was a friend, and we lost him. We just want to know why."

Family members tell CBS 2 Chicago they understand there's both police and surveillance video from the shooting and from the fight before Markham and State police are investigating

The officer who was involved in the shooting is on administrative leave, which is standard procedure for a police-involved shooting.
