Funeral Services Set For Mokena Soldier Killed In Afghanistan
(CBS) -- Services have been scheduled for U.s. Army Private Aaron Toppen, who was killed by friendly fire in Afghanistan 10 days ago.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at Parkview Christian Church in Orland Park. The funeral at the church will be Tuesday at 10 a.m.
Burial will be at St. John's Cemetery in Mokena.
At Sunday's Father's Day service at Parkview, Bears great Mike Singletary was a special guest of Pastor Tim Harlow.
"One of the soldiers that was killed in Afghanistan, Aaron Toppen, is from Parkview. So one of those five that was killed recently this week...
"He had lost his dad just back in February. So Pam is here. And the whole family is sitting down here. So this is the mom of Aaron, who gave his life serving our country.
"And I thought, on Father's Day there is a more appropriate thing than a dad. And let's give the game ball to Pam today."
Mike Singletary gave Aaron Toppen's mother the football he'd signed and said, "God bless you."
Also this week, Aaron Toppen's rank was upgraded to private first class. His home town was honoring the soldier with yellow ribbons and American flags, CBS 2's Chris Martinez reports.
