Evergreen Park Closes Dog Park Over Canine Flu Concerns
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A suburban dog park has been closed temporarily, because of the recent outbreak of dog flu.
Happy Bark Dog Park in southwest suburban Evergreen Park will be a no-bark zone for at least a week or two.
Evergreen Park Mayor Jim Sexton said, on the advice of a local veterinarian, the village has closed the dog park at 91st Street and California Avenue. He said no date has been set when the park will reopen.
The Cook County Department of Animal and Rabies control said there have been more than 1,000 cases of canine influenza in the area, and five dogs have died.
Experts have said dog flu can spread even when dogs are not showing symptoms – which include a persistent cough, sluggish behavior, poor appetite, and fever.
