Evanston Man Charged With Shaking Newborn
CHICAGO (STMW) -- An Evanston man was charged with aggravated battery to an infant after police say he admitted to shaking his 24-day-old daughter who would not stop crying, police said.
About 4:30 a.m. Sunday, staff members at Lurie Children's Hospital called the Evanston Police Department to report a possible case of child abuse, according to a statement from Evanston police.
A 24-day-old girl had sustained injuries that "were not consistent" with the explanation her father, 21-year-old Carlos A. Jaimes, had provided, police said.
After detectives arrived at the hospital and questioned him, Jaimes admitted to shaking the girl after she would not stop crying, police said.
Jaimes, of the 1000 block of Ashland Avenue, was charged with one count of aggravated battery to an infant, a Class X felony, police said. His court information was not immediately available.
The child remains in critical condition but is expected to survive, police said.
