Elmhurst College To Reopen Wednesday With Extra Security, After Two Incidents Of Threatening Graffiti
CHICAGO (CBS)-- Elmhurst College will reopen on Wednesday, after the campus was closed for two days while police investigated incidents of threatening vandalism.
On Sunday night, threatening graffiti found was found in a bathroom stall. The campus was closed on Monday as authorities investigated, and officials said another threatening graffiti message was found Monday afternoon in a residence hall, so the campus remained closed on Tuesday.
Officials said it was unclear if the two incidents of vandalism were connected. Police have said neither threat appeared to be credible.
On Tuesday afternoon, the college announced campus would reopen on Wednesday, with additional security in place.
"Activities that threaten our campus community are completely unacceptable and are a violation of everything the College stands for," said Elmhurst College President Troy VanAken. "Student safety is a top priority, as is a complete and thorough investigation of these incidents."
Additional security officers will be deployed on campus, and Elmhurst Police will step up patrols, the school said. Counselors and other support staff also will be made available to students, faculty, and staff.
"As we move forward, we will learn and grow from what has happened, and our campus community will become stronger," VanAken said. "I look forward to seeing everyone around campus tomorrow."
