Elgin Firefighters File Labor Complaint After Being Told To Cut Hair

(CBS) -- Some Elgin firefighters have filed a labor complaint after they were told to cut their hair, reports WBBM's Terry Keshner.

Three Elgin firefighters started letting their hair grow last spring to protest that firefighters have been working without a contract since January of 2014.

"While it wasn't that big a deal when they first let it go it did begin to unkempt and shabby," said Elgin Fire Chief John Fahey.

So the firefighters were recently ordered to cut their hair, which they filed a complaint not specifically over their hair, but they say the fire department must consult the union on grooming policy.

"They got their message across that they are upset about the process of arbitration and they wanted to make a statement and they did," Fahey said.
