Elgin Firefighter Injured In Vacant Warehouse Fire

ELGIN (CBS) -- An Elgin firefighter was injured in a vacant warehouse fire Wednesday evening in the northwest suburb.

Crews responding to the blaze about 6:45 p.m. in the 800 block of Raymond Avenue found heavy smoke coming from the roof and windows of the vacant warehouse and office building, according to a statement from Elgin Fire Department. The fire was struck out about 10:45 p.m.

One firefighter suffered minor injuries, fire officials said. He was treated at Sherman Hospital in Elgin and later released.

Because of the extent of the fire and the way the building was constructed, a demolition crew had to be brought in to demolish part of the building to allow firefighters to extinguish the blaze, officials said. The building has been vacant for several years and the owner was planning to demolish it over the winter.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, authorities said.
