CHICAGO (STMW) -- A 21-year-old woman was shot and killed while stopped at a red light in the Edgewater neighborhood early Monday.

Police said the woman was driving an SUV and stopped at the intersection of Ridge Avenue, Peterson Avenue, and Paulina Street around 1 a.m., when a man in another vehicle got out and fired several shots.

The woman was shot in the head, and was taken to Presence Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston, where she was pronounced dead.

Police said one of the woman's passengers is a documented gang member, and was the likely target of the shooting, but he was not injured.

The Heart O' Chicago motel is located at the intersection where the woman was shot, and several guests heard the gunfire.

One couple who traveled to Chicago from Germany for a fun getaway woke up startled.

"I just wake up because I heard some shots," Yenzenz Eswielre said. "Pump, pump, pump; and there it was. Then we heard the tires of the car screeching away."

No one was in custody for the shooting as of late Monday morning.
