Edens Expressway Reopens, Suspect In Custody After Barricade Situation In Skokie

CHICAGO (CBS)-- A truck driver from Michigan is in custody, after barricading herself in her semi-tractor trailer for more than 3.5 hours on Wednesday, armed with a gun, prompting police to close part of the Edens Expressway.

Illinois State Police said, around 9 a.m., troopers responded to a call from a trucking company requesting a well-being check on one of their employees, who had stopped on the right shoulder of the northbound lanes of I-94 near Old Orchard Road. When troopers arrived, and tried to speak to the 54-year-old woman behind the wheel, they saw a handgun in her lap.

The woman refused to come out of the truck, and barricaded herself in the rig. Troopers shut down both sides of the Edens Expressway while trying to talk the woman into coming out.

Around 12:20 p.m., the woman got out of the truck, and was taken into custody. A handgun was recovered at the scene, police said.

All southbound lanes of the expressway were reopened by 12:50 p.m., and northbound lanes were reopened around 1:10 p.m.

The truck driver was taken to the hospital for evaluation. No charges have been filed as of Wednesday afternoon.
